Thanjavur,the granery of South India, has two diamonds on its crown. One is the World wonder Raja Raja Chola's Pragadeeshwara Temple for its architectural excellence and the other is Karanthai Tamizh Sangam (1911),with the purpose of developing Tamizh language and Tamizh speaking people.
History
Karanthai Tamizh Sangam with its motto to develop and patronize Tamizh exclusively.The first President of Karanthai Tamizh Sangam is Thiru.T.V.Radhakrishna Pillai handed over the headship of Sangam to his able and beloved elder brother Thiru.T.V.Umamaheswaram Pillai, a renowned lawyer and visionary of Tamizh, under whose leadership Karanthai Tamizh Sangam laid a strong base for the present glorious state. Thiru.T.V.Umamaheswaram Pillai, who was a veteran Tamil Scholar and Philanthropist served as the president of Taulk Board,involved himself in many socio-cultural and religious activities.Being the president, he made many social reforms.
Tamilavel's unsatiable thirst for the development of Tamizh made him to start Karanthai Pulavar Kalloori in the year 1938. His great vision and aspiration to develop Karanthai Tamizh Sangam and its institution to raise to the level of Rabindranath Tagore's 'Shantiniketan' and 'Vishwabharathi University' did not end as a dream on the banks of Sarayu river, where his holy ashes were made universal. Thiru.S.Ramanathan, the grandson of Tamilavel has taken up the task with a vow to make his dream come true.
The granary of South India, Thanjavur adds more pride to its name as Karanthai is a part of Thanjavur on the North. Karanthai Tamizh Sangam is located on the North bank of Vadavar. It was inaugurated for the welfare and growth of Tamil and Tamilians.
கரந்தை தமிழ்ச் சங்கம் (Karanthai Tamil Sangam) was founded by Thiru.T.V.Radhakrishna Pillai B.A.,B.L.,to be the president of Karanthai Tamil Sangam, to which latter agreed. Thereafter,Umamaheswaranar added fame and glory to the presidentship of Sangam. உமாமகேசுவரனார் (Umamaheswaranar) dedicated his sprit and soul to the development of this Sangam. As a mark of respect for all the selfless services and total dedication towards Umamaheswaranar Pillai was honoured with the title Tamilavel Cheiftain of Tamil, in 1938.

In all the above Education Institutions of Karanthai Tamil Sangam nearly 6000 students of both sexes are being educated. Most of them are rural and backward areas from the suburbs of Thanjavur and far off districts of the State. Karanthai Tamil Chemmal's generosity is revealed through the Free Education to students. Many eminent players of the above institutions are provided with free boarding and lodging within the campus which paves the way for many Winning-teams at University level in all games.Even in NSS the students of the college performed outstandingly to reach BEST NSS AWARD 2003 in National Integration Camp, Bihar. Students prove their abilities not only in extra-curricular activities but also in Academic performances. Every year almost all the departments of College excel by reaching University ranks. All the above achievements are possible only with the intense motivation of the Secretary whose attitude reminds us the famous verse of the poem- "To Strive, to Seek, to Find and not to yield"
